HUNTINGTON INGALLS INDUSTRIES, INC. (HII)

Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) is a global defense contractor that designs, builds and delivers naval ships and technologies for the U.S. Navy and other national security customers. It describes itself as America's largest shipbuilder, with its Ingalls and Newport News shipyards having built more ships in more ship classes than any other U.S. naval shipbuilder. The company is headquartered in Newport News, Virginia, and employs about 44,000 people. It acts as prime contractor, principal subcontractor, team member or partner on many high-priority U.S. defense programs.

HII reports through three segments. Ingalls, in Pascagoula, Mississippi, handles non-nuclear ship design, construction, repair and maintenance. It builds amphibious assault ships (LHA and LPD), Arleigh Burke class DDG 51 destroyers, and Legend class national security cutters for the U.S. Coast Guard. HII is the sole builder of amphibious assault ships and one of two builders of U.S. Navy surface combatants. Newport News, in Virginia, covers nuclear ship work. This includes designing and building nuclear-powered aircraft carriers (Gerald R. Ford class CVN 78 and Nimitz class), refueling and complex overhaul (RCOH) and inactivation of carriers, and construction of nuclear submarines. It builds Virginia class submarines under a teaming agreement with Electric Boat (General Dynamics) and is a subcontractor to Electric Boat on Columbia class ballistic missile submarines. It also provides naval nuclear support services. Mission Technologies has four groups: All-Domain Operations, Warfare Systems, Global Security and Unmanned Systems. Its offerings include C5ISR systems, AI and machine learning, cyber and electronic warfare, live, virtual and constructive training, fleet maintenance and modernization, Department of Energy site management and cleanup, and unmanned underwater and surface vehicles.

Most business is with the U.S. Government, primarily the Department of War, including the U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard, Department of Energy and other federal agencies. The U.S. Navy generated about 81%, 80% and 81% of revenues in 2025, 2024 and 2023. Unmanned systems customers span more than 30 countries. HII is the exclusive builder, refueler and inactivator of U.S. nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and one of only two U.S. companies able to design and build nuclear submarines.

HII relies on third parties for raw materials and components, and some must come from U.S. Government-approved sources. It mitigates supply chain risk with long-term supplier agreements and price escalation provisions in some contracts. The shipyards sit on about 800 acres along the Pascagoula River (Ingalls) and about 550 acres near the mouth of the James River (Newport News). The business is subject to oversight by the U.S. Navy's Supervisor of Shipbuilding, DCAA and DCMA, and to government contracting, nuclear, environmental and cybersecurity regulation. In shipbuilding, HII competes primarily with General Dynamics and, in some non-nuclear programs, smaller shipyards. Mission Technologies competes with midsized and large aerospace and defense companies and non-traditional defense technology firms. No material portion of the business is seasonal.
