SBA COMMUNICATIONS CORP (SBAC)
SEC filings, insider trading & institutional ownership from EDGAR.
SBA Communications is a leading independent owner and operator of wireless communications infrastructure, including towers, rooftops and other structures that support antennas used for wireless communications. Its principal operations are in the United States and its territories, and it also owns and operates towers in South America, Central America and Africa. During 2025 it sold all of its towers and ended operations in the Philippines and Colombia, and it sold substantially all of its Canadian operations. Its strategy centers on growing the site leasing business through organic growth, tower acquisitions and new builds, while maximizing tower capacity, controlling the land beneath its towers and exploring ancillary services.
The company has two business lines. Site leasing, its primary business, contributed 97.9% of total segment operating profit in 2025. It leases space to wireless service providers and other customers on assets it owns or operates, and it manages rooftop and tower sites for property owners. Site leasing is divided into two reportable segments: domestic and international. At December 31, 2025, SBA owned 46,328 towers, with 17,394 in the U.S. and its territories (72.6% of site leasing revenue) and 28,934 in 12 international markets. About 30% of its total towers are in Brazil and 10% in Guatemala. The second business line, site development, helps wireless service providers develop and maintain their own networks. SBA is also exploring edge data centers, fiber aggregation huts, satellite ground stations and private networks. It owns two regional data centers in the U.S. and one in Brazil, as well as tower-based data centers, and works with real estate developers on open-access networks.
Customers are mainly wireless service providers, which sign individual site leases or master lease agreements covering multiple sites. Domestic revenue comes primarily from T-Mobile, AT&T Wireless and Verizon Wireless, under initial lease terms of five to ten years with tenant renewal options and annual rent escalators. Internationally, SBA serves all the major carriers in its 12 markets across South America, Central America and Africa, with initial terms of five to fifteen years. Escalators are fixed, inflation-indexed or a mix, and some leases include pass-through charges. Revenues in Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama are largely in U.S. dollars. Brazil, Chile and South Africa are in local currency, and Costa Rica, Peru and Tanzania use a mix. The company cites demand drivers such as rising mobile data traffic, spectrum auctions, 5G deployment and carrier network investment. In 2025 it bought over 7,000 sites from Millicom in Central America and gained a seven-year exclusivity right to build up to 2,500 build-to-suit sites there.
On the operating side, SBA has built towers for wireless providers in the U.S. since 1989 and has owned and operated towers since 1997. It markets tower space through an internal sales force and has field organizations across the U.S. and its international markets. Towers averaged 1.8 tenants per site at year-end 2025. About 71% of its towers sit on land it owns or controls for more than 20 years, with an average remaining ground lease life of 35 years. Roughly 14.5% have ground leases or other property interests maturing within 10 years. The text does not identify headquarters, manufacturing, suppliers or specific competitors.
