OLD DOMINION FREIGHT LINE, INC. (ODFL)
SEC filings, insider trading & institutional ownership from EDGAR.
Old Dominion Freight Line, Inc. is one of the largest North American less-than-truckload (LTL) motor carriers. It provides regional, inter-regional and national LTL services, including expedited transportation, through a single integrated, union-free organization. Through strategic alliances it also provides LTL services throughout North America. The company was founded in 1934, incorporated in Virginia in 1950, and is headquartered in Thomasville, North Carolina.
Its core business is LTL freight, which has historically generated more than 98% of revenue. It also offers value-added services including container drayage, truckload brokerage and supply chain consulting. Services run through a network of 260 service centers across the continental United States at December 31, 2025, of which 240 were owned and 20 leased. The service centers handle local pickup and delivery, and the network includes major breakbulk facilities. Linehaul movements between centers use twin 28-foot trailers, and long-combination vehicles where permitted. Customers can track freight, get rate quotes and access shipping documents and account activity through a centralized customer service department and digital channels.
Revenue comes primarily from customers throughout the United States and North America, and demand is generally tied to industrial production and the health of the U.S. economy. More than 95% of revenue in the last three fiscal years came from services performed in the United States. In 2025 the largest customer represented about 4% of revenue, and the top 20 customers about 23%. Customers engage the company through tariffs, negotiated service contracts and bid solicitations, typically one- to two-year bids awarded to a limited number of carriers. Revenue and operating margins are usually lower in the first and fourth quarters because of reduced winter shipments, and severe weather can also hurt results.
For operations, the company owned 10,184 tractors at December 31, 2025, along with linehaul and pickup-and-delivery trailers. It buys equipment to its own specifications from several manufacturers and runs 48 fleet maintenance centers. It depends heavily on diesel fuel, uses fuel storage facilities at certain service centers, and operates fuel surcharge programs indexed to U.S. Department of Energy prices. It relies on proprietary, integrated technology systems, including cloud-based tools and AI, and carries third-party insurance with self-insured retentions. Competitors include regional, inter-regional and national LTL carriers and, to a lesser extent, truckload carriers, small package carriers, airfreight carriers, railroads and third-party logistics providers. Competition is based mainly on service, price, available capacity and business relationships. The largest five LTL carriers held about 56% of the domestic LTL market in 2024.
