MICROCHIP TECHNOLOGY INC (MCHP)
SEC filings, insider trading & institutional ownership from EDGAR.
Microchip Technology develops, manufactures and sells smart, connected and secure embedded control solutions used in a wide variety of applications. With over 35 years of technology leadership, the company offers what it calls a Total System Solution, a combination of hardware, software and services intended to provide a large portion of the silicon requirements in a customer's application. Its strategic focus includes general purpose and specialized mixed-signal microcontrollers, microprocessors, analog, FPGA, data center, networking and memory products. In July 2024 it entered the 64-bit mixed-signal microprocessor market.
The product portfolio spans several lines. Mixed-signal microcontrollers cover 8-bit, 16-bit and 32-bit architectures, along with 32-bit and 64-bit microprocessors, including the PIC64 family of 64-bit RISC-V multi-core processors for industrial, aerospace, defense and space uses. The company also offers storage controllers, CXL and PCIe memory controllers, and PCIe switches and retimers for AI data center and enterprise infrastructure. The analog line includes power management, linear, high voltage, thermal management, discrete diodes and MOSFETs, RF, gate drivers, timing, USB, ethernet and wireless products. The other product line includes FPGAs, memory products (EEPROMs, serial and parallel Flash, serial SRAM and EERAM), SuperFlash technology licensing and royalties, engineering services, timing systems, wafer foundry and assembly and test subcontracting, legacy ASICs and aerospace products. The company also provides development tools, boards and evaluation kits that support customer designs.
Customers are OEMs that use embedded control systems in products such as automotive systems, communications infrastructure, consumer electronics, data center and AI infrastructure, defense and military hardware, home and building automation, industrial automation, appliances, smart meters, security systems, and satellites and spacecraft. Key end markets are automotive, aerospace and defense, communications, consumer appliances, data centers and computing, and industrial. The company sells worldwide to approximately 101,000 unique customers through direct sales personnel and distributors, with sales and technical support centers in the Americas, Europe and Asia. In fiscal 2026, 47% of net sales came through distributors and 53% from direct customers. Arrow Electronics, the largest distributor, accounted for 12% of net sales, and no other distributor or direct customer exceeded 10%.
Microchip owns a substantial portion of its manufacturing, including wafer fabrication, probe, assembly, test and systems builds. Fab 4 in Gresham, Oregon makes 8-inch wafers, and Fab 5 in Colorado Springs, Colorado makes discrete and specialty products on 6-inch wafers. Fab 2 was closed in May 2025, and several smaller acquired fabs continue to operate. In fiscal 2026, about 35% of sales came from products made in its own U.S. fabs and about 65% from outside foundries, which supply all 300mm wafers. About 67% of assembly and 69% of test were done internally, including at facilities in Thailand and the Philippines, with third-party contractors handling the rest. The company uses multiple suppliers where possible but sometimes relies on a single or limited number. It competes with major domestic and international semiconductor companies and with firms it believes have cloned its products, on factors including performance, integration, power consumption, security, development tools and delivery. It holds U.S. and foreign patents expiring from 2026 through 2045.
