LIGHTPATH TECHNOLOGIES INC (LPTH)
SEC filings, insider trading & institutional ownership from EDGAR.
LightPath Technologies, Inc. is a vertically integrated optics company that designs and manufactures optical components, assemblies and engineered optical solutions. It was incorporated in Delaware in 1992 as successor to earlier New Mexico entities dating to 1985 and 1989. Under a strategy adopted after Sam Rubin became CEO in 2020, it has been shifting from supplying build-to-print optical components toward acting as a solutions partner. In that role it designs, manufactures, assembles and tests complete optical subsystems for OEM customers that do not want to build optics expertise in-house. Its technologies include proprietary BlackDiamond chalcogenide glass (BD2 and BD6) as an alternative to germanium, an exclusive U.S. government license for Naval Research Laboratory chalcogenide materials, precision glass molding, diamond turning, CNC grinding and polishing, thin-film and diamond-like carbon coatings, and optical assembly and testing.
Revenues are reported in three product groups. Precision molded optics (PMOs) are visible-light molded optics, chiefly aspheric lenses. Infrared products are molded and diamond-turned infrared optics and thermal imaging assemblies, including germanium, silicon, zinc selenide and chalcogenide lenses, plus ground and polished lenses. Specialty products are mounted lenses, optical assemblies, collimators (used in LIDAR for driver assistance and autonomous vehicles) and non-recurring engineering products developed under customer agreements. Lenses range from sub-millimeter to over 300 millimeters in diameter, and both catalog and custom designs are offered. The July 2023 acquisition of Visimid Technologies added engineering services and custom thermal and night vision camera cores, and the company is re-evaluating its product groups for fiscal 2024. It has also developed Mantis, an uncooled broadband multispectral infrared camera covering mid-wave and long-wave bands, aimed at uses such as industrial process monitoring and flame and fire detection.
Customers include OEMs and defense contractors across automotive, telecommunications, defense, medical, biotechnology, industrial and consumer goods industries, with photonics as an enabling technology. Infrared applications include thermal imaging cameras, gas and temperature sensing, spectrometers, night vision, automotive driver awareness, thermal weapon sights and countermeasure systems. Visimid serves Department of Defense contractors, commercial and industrial customers, and OEMs. The company has received funding from the U.S. Department of Defense, the Defense Logistics Agency, the U.S. Army, the European Space Agency, Space Florida and Israel's Ministry of Science to speed qualification of its materials and to support development.
LightPath is headquartered in Orlando, Florida, where ISP's manufacturing has been located since June 2019. Other operations are in Riga, Latvia (ISP Optics Latvia), Zhenjiang, China (the primary China manufacturing facility, with a lower cost structure for larger volumes), Jiading, China (sales and support) and Plano, Texas (Visimid). The company has shifted investment emphasis from China toward its U.S. and Latvia operations. It has over 60 employees with engineering and related advanced degrees and spent about $2.1 million on new product development in both fiscal 2022 and 2023. It relies mainly on trade secrets and patents selectively. It describes itself as the original developer of precision molding technology and notes that several other competitors can mold optical elements.
